What a Ceramic Coating Actually Is

Wax sits on top of your paint and washes away in a couple months. A ceramic coating is a liquid that bonds to the clear coat and hardens into a slick, glassy layer that stays put for years. Less like a polish, more like a second skin over your paint.

What It Does for Your Vehicle

Water beads up and rolls off instead of sitting on the paint and drying into spots
Road salt, bird droppings, bugs, and tree sap land on the coating instead of eating into your clear coat — that matters on our winter roads
Sun fading slows way down, because the coating takes the UV instead of your paint
Washing gets easier — dirt does not grab hold the way it does on bare paint, so a rinse does most of the work
The gloss is deeper than wax and it stays that way, instead of washing off in a couple months

Why I Went and Got Certified

Anybody can order a bottle of coating online. What decides whether it lasts five years or five months is the prep — how clean and how corrected the paint is before a single drop goes on, and how evenly it goes down before it hardens. System X put me through their process and signed off on it, so I'm an approved applicator for everything in their product line. I'd rather be trained on it than guess at it with somebody's truck.

How a Coating Day Goes

This is a longer job than a regular detail — most of the work happens before the coating ever comes out of the bottle. Here's the order I work in.

Full hand wash
Wheels, tires, door jambs, the whole vehicle — start from actually clean, not close enough.

Decontamination
A clay treatment pulls the grit that is embedded down in the paint, and an iron remover takes out the orange specks left by brake dust and rail fallout.

Paint correction
Machine polishing to cut out swirls and light scratches. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, so this is the step you do not skip.

Panel wipe
Every surface stripped of polishing oils so the coating can actually bond to the paint.

Coating
Applied by hand, one panel at a time, then wiped down even before it starts to harden.

Cure time
It has to stay dry for a bit before it sees water. I will tell you exactly how long for your vehicle and what to steer clear of that first week.

What It Costs

Ceramic coating is priced per vehicle, and I won't pretend otherwise with a number on a page. A garage-kept car that needs almost no correction is a different job than a work truck that's been through a few Missouri winters. How Long It Lasts

Depends which coating we put on and how the vehicle lives — parked in a garage versus sitting outside all winter makes a real difference. You're looking at years rather than months either way. I'll walk you through the upkeep so you get the full life out of it, and most of that is just washing it the right way.

A coating goes on paint that's already been detailed, so it pairs with the full interior and exterior detail — plenty of folks have me do both in the same visit.
